Nobuyuki JUMBO Sekine
Head Guide Introduction:
Canyoning is not just my profession—it’s my passion. I spend my free time exploring new canyons and guiding adventurous tours.
I was first captivated by guiding at NAOC (Nature Adventure Outdoor Club, a leading outdoor tour company in Nikko), which inspired me to pursue a career in canyoning. Later, I became the head guide of the canyoning division at Canyons (a well-known adventure tour operator in Japan).
At their Okutama branch (a popular outdoor area west of Tokyo), I served as deputy manager, handling everything from carpentry to overall site management.
I also have international guiding experience, having worked in New Zealand, one of the world’s top canyoning destinations.
In 2018, I founded Nikko Jumbo (our own canyoning company based in Nikko) and now serve as its director. I’m passionate about helping people discover the hidden natural beauty of Nikko that many travelers have yet to experience.
Qualifications:
A1. Absolutely! Our tours are designed with safety in mind and are suitable for beginners. An experienced, English-speaking guide will accompany you throughout the activity. As long as you’re in good health and have basic physical fitness, no prior experience is necessary.
A2. Yes, you can. We provide buoyant life jackets and wetsuits, so strong swimming skills are not required. However, if you’re not comfortable in the water, please let us know in advance.
A3. Some parts of the tour include rappelling down waterfalls and optional jumps. However, most jumps can be skipped, and alternate routes are available (except on certain tours). If you’re uncomfortable with heights, please inform your guide beforehand.
A4. Please wear a swimsuit under the wetsuit we provide. We also supply wetsuits, helmets, harnesses, and life jackets. Be sure to bring your swimsuit, health insurance card, towel, and a change of clothes. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, please bring a glasses strap or spare lenses, as there’s a risk they may come off during the tour.
A5. Tours will proceed in light rain. However, if there is heavy rain, thunderstorms, or any unsafe conditions, the tour may be canceled. In such cases, we will offer rescheduling or a full refund.
A6. The minimum age for participation is 13. If you’d like to bring a child, please contact us in advance to discuss suitability.
A7. The minimum number of participants per tour is two.
A8. You’re welcome to bring a waterproof camera or GoPro, but please note that you’re responsible for its safety. We also offer complimentary photos and videos taken by your guide during the tour.
